the spirituality of parenting

i receive a fair share of emails about the spirituality of children, particularly from folks who are transitioning out of more organized forms of church. i receive emails from Speaking of Faith, which is a radio show about all things spirituality and religion. the recent edition is about children and the spirituality of parenting. the expressed views may or may not line up with all your religious beliefs, but i found the conversation extremely interesting, especially the difference between “religion” and spirituality”. here’s the link to the audio interview. when you get to the page, click on “Listen now.”

I have found myself learning more about who God is through being a daddy of four. Who needs Systematic Theology when you have Law and Grace and Sin and Love played out before you all day, every day. At one moment you are ready to rain down fire and brimstone, and the next you are so tenderhearted for them you cry. What more is worship than four giggling rug-rats yelling “Daddy’s home!” and running for hugs at the end of a long day?
I’m discovering I’ve been sold a bill of goods about God, and I learned that from my kids.

Amen to that. I have learned 100 times more about God and Spirit from my daughter than I ever could from a book about God. Though I love to learn through reading, they dont even compare. On a side note, my daughter was relaying a story about her little friend who is Muslim. The girl was describing what she had been told about hell by her parents. Apparently they said to the girl that your hair and skin will burn off only to be replaced and then burned off again. Forever repeating the horrific event. I told my daughter many Christians believe the same thing. She then told me what she and the little girl said. They looked at each other and said ” theres no way a loving GOD would do that”……..Out of the mouths of babes
